William, Kate score in California charm tour
SANTA BARBARA, California - On a green and glamorous California polo field, Britain's Prince William and new wife Kate charmed the deep-pocketed polo set and raised millions of dollars for charity in their first U.S. visit as a royal couple.
William, an avid polo player, made good on his promise to win a charity polo match and scored four goals for his team. That earned him a pair of kisses from Kate at the upscale charity event in the wealthy coastal enclave of Santa Barbara.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge pulled off the event with the humor and effortless style that have come to characterize their 2-month-old marriage. The majestic backdrop of the coastal mountains only enhanced their magnetism.
While polo may be an elite sport, William and Kate have tried to make their three-day visit to California anything but stuffy. On Sunday, they will visit a children's art center in the middle of Los Angeles' Skid Row and meet military veterans and their families.
They will, however, see none of the large crowds that flocked to them on their tour through Canada before they came to California.
For the former Kate Middleton, it is the first time in the United States and sunny Southern California clearly suited her relaxed and sporty style.
Arriving from Los Angeles on a sleek silver helicopter, the the duchess wore a silver and marble gray hand-painted chinoiserie silk dress by Jenny Packham. The duke sported a blue blazer over a white shirt and trousers before suiting up in a purple and white polo uniform.
Good humor
The tickets for the match cost between $400 and $4,000 and proceeds will go to the foundation of William, Kate and William's brother Harry Rolex replica watches, for causes like military veterans and their families and sustainable development. The polo players also anted up $50,000 to play against the prince and $100,000 to play with him.
In his first public remarks of the visit, William deadpanned at a pre-match reception that he was "not a good loser" and charmed the room with typical British humor.
"The prospect of being able to let loose this afternoon is wonderful for me. That is what sport is all about, being it polo Rolex replica watches, football -- sorry, I mean soccer -- or whatever your preferred sport is," he said with comic effect.
Mindful of the economic austerity back home, William and Kate are making their California visit more about business than pleasure, with most activities centered on charity and trade promotion.
On their arrival in Los Angeles Friday from Canada, they went straight to a technology forum to encourage investment in a British tech hub. California Governor Jerry Brown gave the young royal couple an Apple iPad 2 loaded with California-themed songs and apps.
But celebrity is never far away in the entertainment capital of the world.
British soccer star David Beckham attended the reception in their honor on Friday. Later Saturday, A-list Hollywood stars from both America and Britain are expected at a black-tie dinner organized by the British Academy for Film and Television, of which William is president.

Bacolod mall-goers undaunted by ’swine flu’
BACOLOD CITY - It seems not even "swine flu" could get in the way of fun for Bacolod mall-goers.
Reports said that the volume of people flocking to malls in Bacolod City has not dwindled despite numerous health advisories on social distancing amid the influenza A(H1N1) outbreak. Customers were still seen shopping or hanging out with friends and family at the air-conditioned malls in the city.
Joseph Sian, Group Property Manager of Robinson's Place in Bacolod said that, although the mall had already been implementing sanitary practices, the establishment has stepped up its efforts.
Aside from alcohol dispensers placed at mall entrances, restrooms are equipped with sensor-activated sanitary equipment. Even the air fresheners inside the comfort rooms automatically spray disinfectant every two minutes.
SM City Bacolod, meanwhile, have reportedly installed footbaths in every mall entrance aside from providing alcohol and distributing informative leaflets about the A(H1N1) virus. At 1 p.m. every day, the mall temporarily closes its restrooms for 15 minutes to allow utility crew to sanitize the facilities.
The escalators are also temporarily shut down for one day so that the rubber handles and other machine parts could be sanitized.
Julia Javellana, SM City Bacolod Assistant Mall Manager, said that they are taking the "swine flu" concern seriously.
Mask sales
However, while the disease outbreak has not disrupted mall-going patterns, it has also sparked a massive demand for protection against "swine flu."
Local pharmacies in the Negros region reported an increase in sales of surgical masks Replica watches, which many believe help in protecting the nose and mouth from inhaling cough or sneeze droplets from those who might carry the A(H1N1) virus.
Bernie Osorio of Botica Nelia in Bago City said surgical mask sales at their store has almost doubled. "We used to sell 70 masks on the average per day. The past week up until now, sales of masks have risen to 150 pieces per day," he said.
Osorio added that sales of Vitamin C pills and alcohol have also been increasing significantly, though not as much as surgical masks. The same is reportedly true for pharmacies in Bacolod City.
According to the Department of Health Wednesday, the Philippines has 311 total cases of A(H1N1) infections nationwide, 94 of whom have already recovered.
The public was advised to observe personal hygiene measures like hand washing and covering the nose and mouth when coughing. Those experiencing flu-like symptoms should stay at home for at least a week and take lots of rest and fluids.
Local health department officials strongly encouraged those working at hospitals and those with cough, fever, runny nose, and sore throat to wear protective surgical masks. The general public Replica watches, meanwhile, need not wear masks at this time. With a report from Barbara Mijares, ABS-CBN Negros.
Internet group sues Bush for electronic eavesdropp
SAN FRANCISCO - A non-profit Internet rights group on Thursday filed a lawsuit against President George W. Bush and others in his administration for the "massively illegal" surveillance of emails and telephone calls without court warrants.
The suit was filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) Replica Watches, which took the administration to task for what it argued is "illegal surveillance of millions of ordinary Americans."
EFF lawyers filed a suit against AT&T in 2006 charging the US telecoms giant had opened up its network to National Security Agency (NSA) agents without proper court-approved warrants.
This year Congress passed legislation granting US telecommunications firms immunity from domestic spying lawsuits.
Wrangling about the constitutionality of that act has stalled the AT&T lawsuit as well as a slew of similar litigation aimed at other telecommunications firms.
EFF lawyers said Thursday the new lawsuit is aimed squarely at government officials Replica Watches, thereby sidestepping the immunity act.
"Our goal in this new case against the government, as in our case against AT&T, is to dismantle this dragnet surveillance program as soon as possible," said EFF senior staff attorney Kevin Bankston.
"For years, the NSA has been engaged in a massive and massively illegal fishing expedition through AT&T's domestic networks and databases of customer records."
The suit names Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, as well as attorneys general, the NSA director and 100 "john does" yet to be identified.
It accuses them of personally violating the US constitution and a host of federal laws by helping orchestrate or carry out illegal snooping of Internet and voice communications.
The lawsuit asks the court to order federal officials to account for and then destroy information illegally-obtained from AT&T databases and to pay unspecified cash damages.
Bankston said the EFF had ample evidence that the NSA "is vacuuming up millions upon millions of ordinary AT&T communications."
EFF attorneys expect federal officials to argue to the court that a "state secrets privilege" protects them from the litigation because information revealed while defending themselves could threaten national security.
Bankston dismissed such a defense, saying the EFF is not interested in exposing what US spies may have found but only whether they had proper legal authority to snoop on US citizens' telephone and Internet communications.
The US District Court judge presiding over the suits against the telecom firms earlier rejected the "states secret" argument by government lawyers who have appealed his decision.
Consideration of the appeal has been suspended pending resolution of whether the granting of immunity to telecoms companies forces the dismissal of the cases in the lower court.

‘Lola Techie’ campaign wins int’l award
MANILA - A Filipino advertisement showing a humorous and tech-savvy grandmother won at an international advertising awards tilt in Beijing, China.
Bayan Telecommunications Inc's. (Bayantel) "Lola Techie" campaign was given a Gold Award at the 2009 Digital Media Awards held in Beijing. The awards are given to successful digital campaigns globally.
In the ads, 66-year-old Lola Techie Cruz (played by Tessie Moreno) defies conventional notions of technophobic senior citizens. She talks to her fictional grandson named JR via webcam, chastising him for failing to keep in touch with her online.
"Buti pa yung mga pinsan mo sa States, nakakapag-forward ng YouTube video. Ilang ulit na ako nagsuper-poke sa'yo sa Facebook, di ka man magpoke back... Ida-drop kick na kita!" she tells JR sternly.

The "creative and catchy" ads, he said, has helped their business grow. "I think [our business] grew by about 45% since last year in terms of subscriptions," Rojo said.
Cult status
Riding on Lola Techie's popularity, especially among the youth, Bayantel set up social networking sites for Lola Techie on Twitter, Facebook, Multiply and Plurk. She also has a channel on YouTube.
